Please contact your Colorado Representative and ask them to support House Bill 1092 for Open Roads. Voicemails and emails are great, and be sure to include your home address so they know you are from their district. The House vote may be any day this week, so please call today.

-This bill will give people the freedom to travel the state by bicycle.

-Banning bikes gives Colorado’s bicycle and tourism industries a black eye.

-Bicycles simply need an alternate route if a road is closed.

Two Bicycle Bills in State Legislature

Mountain Bike Safety Act

The Mountain Bike Safety Act (SB 36), sponsored by state Senator Greg Brophy (R), is currently scheduled for a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee early next week. The bill will help develop mountain biking areas and events by defining the inherent risks of mountain biking and reducing liability of landowners that allow mountain biking on their land. Please check our website to find out if your state senator is on this committee and contact him or her to ask for their support of the bill.

Open Roads Act

State Representative Andy Kerr (D) is sponsoring the Open Roads Act (HB 1092), currently in the House Transportation Committee. The act is scheduled for a vote next week. The goal of the bill is to provide Colorado citizens and visitors with the ability to travel to jobs, schools, stores and attractions by bicycle without restriction from using public streets. Please check our legislative priorities page on our website to get more information about this bill and then contact your representative to urge him or her to support this bill.

Shindig: 9:00AM Saturday July 10, SMT Trail Work Day at the North Backbone northern terminus. This once-a-month SMT Shindig Trail Work Day will focus on the construction of new trail at the North Backbone northern terminus. Lunch will be served after the trail work around 2:00PM. Meet at the parking lot on Ute Trail, County Road 175, 0.3 miles (three tenths of a mile) after the pavement ends. Volunteers are welcome to experience a morning of trail building on the exciting new North Backbone Trail in the Arkansas Hills Trail System. Come prepared with water, gloves, long pants and sturdy boots. Tools will be provided. Find out how satisfying digging in the dirt can be.

The Trailhead’s New Skills Park

Buena Vista, CO May 27 2010 – The Trailhead/Trailhead Cycle & Ski in Buena Vista has installed a mountain bike track behind the shop at 707 Hwy 24 N. Arrowhead Trails of Salida completed the trail the week of 24 May using sustainable trail design and trail building concepts. A formal dedication and ribbon cutting is scheduled for 10a Saturday, June 5th which is National Trails Day.

A beginner loop surrounds the entire area, called the TrailCenter™, with more challenging spurs and excursions branching off. The track allows such things as realistic test rides (especially good for first-time MTB buyers), post-maintenance test rides, clinics, trail maintenance & building workshops, and other opportunities – all on-site. The TrailCenter™ is designed to accommodate future expansion and a planned building expansion.

The TrailCenter™ is open to Trailhead Cycle & Ski customers and invited guests. It is not yet open to the general public. All users are required to check in at the shop, sign a waiver, and get a quick familiarization briefing. Normal helmet, safety, and courtesy rules will apply and will be posted.

“This fulfills a dream we have had for over six years” said Trailhead co-owner Evelyn Baker. “We believe it will help cycling – mountain biking in particular – grow in our community.” She adds “We encourage parents to use the TrailCenter™ as a safe, convenient place to introduce their children to mountain biking.”

Monarch Crest!!!!!!! needs your help

Bicyclists;
You may not be aware, but the gunnison national forest is ending a travel management plan which originally proposed making the Monarch “Crest” trail a mountain bike trail to Greens Creek, but has now withdrawn that proposal and suggests making it a motorcycle trail.
There is time to comment on this until May 30.

DENVER, Colo.–A range of cycling celebrities will join Olympic and World Cup stars, Susan DeMattei andDave Wiens in an historic weekend at the inaugural Colorado CycleFest, on Saturday May 1, and Sunday May 2, 2010, in support of the Colorado High School Cycling League.

Included among the cycling stars joining DeMattei and Wiens are Jonathan Vaughters of the Garmin-Transitions cycling team; Specialized riders: inaugural UCI mountain bike world champion, Ned Overend, and 24-Hour world champion Rebecca Rusch; and Trek rider, Olympian Travis Brown.

Matt Fritzinger, head of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, said “It’s great so see such a large collection of past and present champion cyclists rallying for high school cycling. Every one of these athletes understands the historical significance of introducing cycling as an organized sport for high school students.”

Attendees at the Colorado CycleFest weekend will enjoy a gala dinner and silent auction on Saturday, May 1, in Palettes Restaurant at the Denver Art Museum. Then on Sunday, May 2, is a rare opportunity to ride with the two Mountain Biking greats, Susan DeMattei and Dave Wiens, when they lead a road ride from Boulder followed by lunch at the Bacaro Venetian Taverna, hosted by Fabio Flagiello.

A host of fabulous prizes for the silent auction are donated by Founding National Sponsor Specialized, as well as SRAM, Trek, Wheat Ridge Cyclery and Yeti.
